Albizia Lebbeck, also known as Indian Siris, Woman's Tongue, or Silk Tree, is a beautiful native tree found in Indomalaya, New Guinea, Northern Australia, and is now widely cultivated and naturalized in other tropical and subtropical regions. This tree is well-known for its versatile uses.
As a nitrogen-fixing tree, Albizia Lebbeck has value for its quality hardwood used in cabinet making, veneer, and construction. It also provides fuel-wood, charcoal, and honey, making it an important food source for wildlife. In addition, its extensive, shallow root system makes it ideal for soil binding, soil conservation, and erosion control. It is often used as an ornamental avenue tree and provides great shade.
The bark of the Albizia Lebbeck tree contains saponins and tannins, which are used in making soap and tanning. It is deciduous and grows rapidly to a height of 18–30 meters tall with a trunk diameter ranging from 50 cm to 1 meter. The leaves are bipinnate with one to four pairs of pinnae, each containing 6–18 leaflets. The cream white flowers are hemispheric pom-poms with numerous fragrant long stamens, attracting insect pollinators. The fruit is a pod 15–30 cm long, containing six to twelve seeds. This tree is hardy to USDA Zones 9b, tolerating temperatures down to -3.8 °C (25 °F).
Albizia Lebbeck is used in traditional medicine, with the flowers, fruit, bark, leaves, and roots all having medicinal properties. It is commonly used to treat allergies, skin conditions, blood disorders, and respiratory tract issues. Notably, Albizia Lebbeck does not contain alkaloids.
